What is Calisthenics?
Calisthenics is a form of bodyweight training that uses minimal or no equipment to build strength, flexibility, and endurance.
1. Street Lifting: This type focuses on strength-based exercises, particularly movements like pull-ups, dips, and muscle-ups. Athletes compete to lift and control their own bodyweight for maximum reps or with the highest possible weight added (e.g., weighted pull-ups). Street lifting emphasizes raw power and control over bodyweight movements.
2. Reps and Sets (Endurance): In this category, athletes aim to perform as many repetitions of bodyweight exercises (such as push-ups, squats, or pull-ups) as possible within a set time or until failure. The focus is on muscular endurance, stamina, and consistency, pushing the limits of how many repetitions can be done while maintaining proper form.
3. Freestyle: Freestyle calisthenics combines strength, flow, and creativity. Athletes perform choreographed routines or spontaneous sequences, blending skills like handstands, planche, muscle-ups, and other dynamic moves. The goal is to demonstrate fluidity, creativity, and body control, often judged based on the complexity, style, and smoothness of transitions between movements.
